Very Expensive Trade
Not a fan of last nights trade. I love Kimbrel and moving Benoit to a setup or 7th inning guy is smart considering he is 38. Benoit has also lost pop on the fastball. But, Adding one of the worst contracts in baseball for a guy that is hurt physically (DL) and lost mentally was a Godsend for the Braves.
AJ Preller had added all this talent at very little cost relatively speaking this off season until last night. Not this deal. Took on 60 MILLION to a guy with no where to play. Probably will end up being his brothers replacement in 2016. Everyone chirping about the combine salary of Quentin and Maybin are idiots. Padres got rid of Quentin @ 1yr/9m. Maybin is an above average defensive outfielder. Ill take maybe at 12m/2 years over BJ Upton for 60m/4yrs. Maybin would have been a great late inning defender that this team will probably need(Vebable does not have close to the same range).
Love everything about Kimbrel. Love his entrance music( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le3m64Qvnuc ). Love his attitude. Padres are gambling big time that this dudes arm stays in good health. Guy has thrown A TON of pitches in last 5 years. If Kimbrel doesn't stay healthy this year - This could be an all time horrendous trade.
Padres are ALL IN in 2015. They have moved 3 legit prospects this off season (Turner, Fried, Wisler) and now a top 50 pick in this Kimbrel deal. Either AJ comes from the Kenny Williams school of instant success to secure himself an extension or the Padres are going to be serious about spending moving forward. I will have to see it to believe it in 2016 with their payroll. Padres have pushed all their chips to the middle of the table and I respect the hell out of it. Might be uglier than hell though in 3 years though.
I would like them to move Renfroe and Hedges for Hamels. Need one more legit arm to make this club a potential NL pennant contender. Staff needs a lefty with experience. A best of five series against LA or DC will be a tough matchup for this roster. Their pitching will have to be VERY VERY good with the lack of range at almost every position defensively.
P.S. Having 70 million committed to 4 players next year is crazy town considering this teams average payroll in the last decade.
P.P.S. Safe to say AJ Preller didn't care much about the farm system. I am a big fan of moving prospects for talent. Just has to be controlled talent. Kimbrel/Myers/Kemp are controlled. Not so much on Justin Upton. Hope Preller knows how to draft.
Keith Law Take on Trade : (1:45 mark) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDq9nSq13XQ#t=20
East Coast Hot Take Alert : The Red Sox are going to score a Billion runs this year and Mash a Million home runs. Conservatively speaking.
Might give up a million as well. TAKE THE OVER.
